A ZIP download can look like a file that needs a special app, but Apple’s Files app can open ordinary ZIP archives directly. The important first step is knowing where the download was saved and checking the file extension before trying a different tool.
Open a ZIP file with the iPhone Files app
- Open Files and tap Browse.
- Look in Downloads, On My iPhone, or the iCloud Drive folder where you saved it.
- Tap the ZIP archive once. Files creates a folder beside it containing the extracted items.
- Tap the new folder to review and open its contents.
If the archive arrived in Mail or another app, use its share or save option to put the file in Files first. The exact button label varies by app. Apple’s current instructions cover creating and opening ZIP files in Files on iPhone, iPad, and Apple Vision Pro.
Check the extension before troubleshooting
Look at the end of the filename. .zip is different from .rar or .7z; renaming a RAR file so it ends in “.zip” does not convert its contents. Apple’s built-in instructions describe ZIP archives. If the sender provided a RAR or 7z file, you may need an archive utility that explicitly supports that format.
For a password-protected archive, get the password from the person or service that sent it. Do not send private files to an unfamiliar online extractor just to avoid installing an app.
If tapping the ZIP does nothing
- Find the saved copy. Check Files’ Downloads, On My iPhone, and iCloud Drive locations.
- Download it again. An interrupted download may leave an incomplete archive.
- Check available space. Extracted contents need room in addition to the compressed file.
- Ask for a fresh archive. The file may be damaged or use a compression method the current tool does not read.
- Open the extracted folder. Some archives contain another folder, so the documents may not appear alongside the ZIP.
Keep the original archive until you have opened the files you need. If the archive contains a document you plan to send, check the recipient and destination before sharing it.
When a separate archive app may help
A utility can be useful when you need to create an archive, handle a format that Files does not open, or keep archive-related steps together. The current App Store listing for Unzip Fast - ZIP RAR 7Z says it can create ZIP archives and extract ZIP, RAR, and 7z files to the device.
Archive compatibility can depend on how a file was created, and a listing is not a guarantee that every variant or password setting will work. If you choose a utility, test it with a non-sensitive file first and keep the original until you have verified the extracted items. For a routine ZIP, start with Files and add another app only if you have a specific need.
Before you share the extracted files
Open the files you intended to retrieve and make sure they are complete. ZIP folders can contain many items, including files you did not expect. Share only what you need, with the intended person, and avoid opening archives from senders you do not trust.
